Well, after doing a bunch of research and checking out the testimonials here and elsewhere, I decided to buy Keystone KSTAW08A Energy Star 8,000 BTU 115-Volt Window-Mounted Air Conditioner with "Follow Me" LCD Remote Control. Though I 'd have chosen a much better warranty, I chose the features were attractive enough to attempt it. It is a bunch of cash to discard if it falls short just after the warranty. I am entirely in love with this item. It is high quality product, clever features. I simply got it today, and I will update my review later on if required.
Good air conditioner, expensive white noise generator
Air conditioner received in excellent condition, securely packaged.
It's easily powerful enough for my 250 sq ft bedroom, creating a noticeable differential to the rest of the apartment. The directional vents must be somewhat effective as it cools effectively even though the window is in the corner. The advertising materials say the energy efficiency rating is very high. Without a detailed study of my power bills, the weather for summer, and many years of comparison, I can't verify this directly. But I'm willing to accept it for the sake of circumstantial evidence.
The remote is small and easily lost, but can be used as a remote temperature control using the position of the remote (there's a thermometer in the remote). In order to use this function, however, the remote must be left somewhere with an unobstructed line of sight to the unit.
Con: as air conditioners go, this one is fairly loud, even on the lowest setting. Even the fan-only setting is...
